During his eight years in Gaelic Storm Ryan has accomplished quite a bit. He moved to four different states, recorded on nine albums, got married, watched over 5000 movies, bought over 6000 CDs and went skydiving.
Ryan spent his youth in the great wasteland of Bakersfield, known widely for its country music scene and its ridiculous microwave-like heat. At the age of 11, he stole his father's drum set and made it his own. Then at the ripe age of 13 he was booted from the school band; apparently he was a bit too loud. It was then he knew the drums were his future.
After a brief stint in college studying philosophy Ryan moved to Yosemite National Park to work, play poker, play chess, and play a bit of music. At 19, after earning the price of a one- way flight on Aer Lingus, he moved to Ireland to continue his musical career. He soon hooked up with an Irish label, Origin Records, and became one of their house drummers for recordings and tours. During his 4-year stint in Ireland, Ryan toured throughout Europe with the Maighread Nelligan band, Sarah Lynch band, Dextris, and Guava.
When he came back to the States, Ryan went to the Los Angeles Music Academy ,and graduated twice, once for hands and once for sticks. After graduating Ryan played with a bunch of different bands around L.A., and even performed as the house drummer for the rock opera, "Repo! The Genetic Opera" which later became a major motion picture for which he played on the soundtrack.
In 2003 Ryan joined Gaelic Storm; since then he has recorded on five of the band's records, and he has done co-production on the last two (What's The Rumpus, Cabbage). He also puts together videos for the band's website and recently started blogging about the band's happenings. In his spare time off the road, Ryan conducts drum workshops around the country and teaches percussion to private students in Seattle and Chicago.
